5G Connectivity for Everything and Everyone, The Role of 6 GHz and UHF

Two hybrid sessions were held on 1st March in Barcelona during Mobile World Congress 2023:

With 5G Mobile Broadband deployed at a rapid pace all around the world, 5G has the potential to dramatically drive economic growth, enhance consumers’ lives, transform numerous industry sectors, and influence our societies in a profound and fundamental way.

In preparation for the World Radio Conference 2023 (Dubai, 20th November – 15th December 2023) policymakers are confronted with important strategic decisions which will greatly impact the future development of 5G, with its ability to deliver value to society through affordable mobile broadband.

WRC-23 offers two key opportunities for additional low-band and mid-band spectrum for 5G: the opportunity to unleash 700 MHz of new mid-band spectrum in the upper 6 GHz band (6425 – 7125 MHz); as well as the opportunity to make available low-band spectrum in the 470 – 694 MHz range to connect the unconnected cost effectively.

These two sessions were designed to contribute to the intense debates surrounding these important bands that are taking place as the conference approaches. Leading policymakers and representatives from the mobile industry exchanged views on how to balance the growing demand for spectrum from different sectors; the importance of these ranges for affordable mobile broadband, digitalization and climate goals; on the status of the WRC-23 preparation in different countries and regions; and on the latest ecosystem developments.
